2009 Chevrolet 2500HD Duramax

I am looking for a bigger truck. I found a 2009 Duramax for 31995 with 74000 miles on it. Are these good trucks? I was also looking at a 2011 Ford F350 with the 6.7L with a little less miles but they want 39900. I think that the 2500HD is strong enough to pull my Sabre. What truck would you choose? The F350 has gotten good recommendations from all of you but am also watching the $ I have to spend.
  • The 2500HD engine and tranny is "strong" but the truck only has a GVWR of 9200 lbs.

To stay within the GVWR - You will want a truck with a GVWR of 11,500 or better. Newer 3500HD (2011 or newer) or a 2010 or older dually.

So go for the Ford - it should have a GVWR of about 11,500 if it is SRW - more if it is a dually.
I have a friend that has been looking at used trucks and the Fords are going for $4-5,000 more.
The Ford new was probably "stickered" for $55,000 or more.

My CAT scale weight (loaded for 2 weeks of camping; gray and black tanks empty and 1/2 tank of water):
    Steer Axle - 4900 lbs
    Drive Axle - 6060 lbs
    Trailer Axle - 9220 lbs
    Gross Weight - 20,180 lbs

I am sure your trailer weight and pin weight is more than mine. This should be info on your rig - your weight from the factory is more that what is advertised (options).

  • A 2009 Duramax should be a solid truck. For your use I would hold out for a 3500.
  • My 2 cents - for that fiver, I recommend a 1 ton (srw). You will exceed payload real quick with any 3/4 ton and a fiver with pin weight over 2k lbs. If you are shopping for trucks, you may as well buy one that will give you a decent safety margin.
I was towing my fiver with 3/4 ton but was over truck payload when loaded by 400 lbs, even though I was within the tow rating and gcwr of the truck . With my 1 ton SRW, I now have 500 lbs payload to spare, in addition to much better ride and handling. My fiver weighs in loaded at 12,280 lb with 2,400 pin weight.
