2011 F250 Super Cab Short Box 6.7 Diesel towing?

Hey guys,

What can this 140" wheelbase vehicle safely tow? I'd like to get a 5th wheel if possible. My concerns are narrow wheelbase vs trailer length.

I'd like to keep my wheelbase short so it can fit in garage.

Thanks

Actually the SuperCab wheelbase is about 142"s. It will be a non issue when towing, especially towing a FW. If anything, it will help to maneuver in close quarters. I've towed several FWs with a Ford 6'9" bed, no sliding hitch, since 99, with no issue. YMMV

    Thanks!

  • Well i don't know and maybe you should for your own satisfaction.

Pick up a brochure from the ford stealer and see what your wheel base is actually.

I been towing with Ford short boxes like yours for something like 17 years now. current fifth wheel weighs in at 10K plus or minus 300.

And I never in my life had a slider.

yeah yeah, pay me now or pay me later. :B
  • My 2005 in the same configuration had a 14k+ lb FW tow rating and and a 12.5k lb TT tow rating. I regularly towed an 11.5k lb toyhauler and I also carried a 4K lb truck camper while towing an 8k lb enclosed trailer.

Once you are over 6k lbs on the rear axle, it needs some suspension help. Once you are over rear tire limits, it will handle more with 19.5" wheels. The TC and enclosed trailer tongue weight was typically 8k lbs on my rear axle. I had the truck for 10 years and did not have any problems putting 1k miles a month on the truck this way.
  • Trailer length on 5th wheel not as much concern as on bumper pull

    Hitch weight is the issue

Stay under 12K GVWR 5th wheel to be within trucks ratings
  • It's not a matter of wheelbase or bed length. With a 3/4 ton truck and fifth wheels, you're going to be limited by the rear axle and tire capacities. Most fifth wheels now have 23 - 25% of their loaded (think GVWR - not dry weight) weight on the pin. 23% of 14,000 lbs is 3,220 lbs. Once the truck is loaded with occupants, fuel, and a hitch, you're not going to be able to put that kind of pin weight on it. Ask me how I know... Any of the three American-made diesel light trucks will pull a house off it's foundation - you just can't put the weight of a house on the rear axle.

  • I towed 5th wheel trailers for years with a short bed. Trailers now all have extended pin boxes. Just watch when backing and making sharp turns. I never liked to make sharp turns anyway.
  • I think you are limited to about 13-14k pounds. 5th wheel is fine but you will probably have to get a slider to keep the trailer away from your cab. I prefer a one ton long box crew cab for towing but if you have the truck already it will tow.
