- Buck50HDExplorerI don't disagree with the comments about towing a TT in the wind, which is why I have a 5th.
I'll point out a few facts that most overlook. An F150 crew 6.5' box with HD payload package compared to an older gas 2500HD:- As heavy or maybe slightly heavier, 6200lbs
- Longer WB, 157"
- bigger brakes
- Same E tires
- Sprung just as stiff
It's only missing the full floating rear end of the 2500HD but that doesn't affect the handling characteristics.
OP, if you tow in open country with wind, you probably won't like that combo. Look for a smaller trailer or commit to a 3/4 ton because you're not going to find an F150HD used. - Dannyabear1Explorer

You will end up buying a larger pick up anyways so you might as well go ahead and do it. I don't know where you're from but if you're anywhere near mountains you're going to want something that will hold to the road little bit better than a maxed out half ton pick up. Your brakes need to be more of a consideration then the motor.
Not to mention the suspension, chassis, wheelbase, etc; get the right tool for the job - parkersdadExplorerYou will end up buying a larger pick up anyways so you might as well go ahead and do it. - AlmostAnOldGuyExplorerI tow an 8k 28' TT with the rig in my signature and and it does well. All F150s are not the same and with that trailer I would want at least the Max Tow package and a good WD hitch with anti sway. I have never towed in significant crosswinds and think EcoBullets comments regarding wind are worth thinking about.
Good luck,
Stu - EcoBulletExplorerExcellent questions regarding payload. Assuming that is okay, another thing to consider is how far will you tow, and in what conditions. A short tow to a local campground for the weekend is different than an extended tow across the plains in spring when the wind is howling. It is fresh on my mind that heavy crosswinds, long trailers, and light trucks are not a pleasant combination. In calm winds, my rig tows great. But, about a week ago, I pulled from Destin, FL to Breaux Bridge, LA in a wind that was mostly 20 mph, with gusts to 30. Not fun!
- mdamerellExplorer2014 passport 31RE around 6,200# dry so lets call it 8,000# loaded (probably less but we are doing rough math)
8,000 x 0.15 = 1,200# tongue weight
8,000 x 0.10 = 800#
Ford Tow Guides
GVWR is around 8,200# but you need to weigh our truck loaded with family and goods to know actual load capacity for trailer. Depending upon cab configuration, 4x2 or 4x4 etc.. you have roughly 1,600# to 2,600# of load capacity. Fuel, family, stuff and tongue weight.
Could be doable but not enough information, limited by you tongue weight and how much stuff you carry in you truck. - rhagfoExplorer IIII guess it would depend on the packages installed on the truck. if Max/Max easy to pull, Towing package only hitch weight could be an issue.
What is your GVWR, and payload?
