2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4x4 3.6L to Tow Pup ??

Hello! New to the forums here, but have enjoyed reading some of the past posts. I do have a question that I hope someone out there can help out with. Looking to upgrade our tow vehicle. We currently have a 2003 Starcraft 2106L pup, and really have no plans to upgrade this pup. Suits us just fine for what we do.

I have the opportunity to purchase a 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4x4 3.6L V6 with a factory installed tow hitch (ClassII), plus trailer sway damping.

Do you think this vehicle would be suitable to tow our pup or should we be looking for something a bit larger. I do not have the specs of the pup with me, but I believe with options and unloaded weighs right around 2000 lbs.

Thanks in advance!

  • Personally, I would not tow more than a pop up with a Jeep GC. Wheel base is narrow, center of gravity is high and wheelbase is short. All of these items lead to poor towing performance.

It will be an easy tow, and the 3.6 Pentastar V6 is a great engine, but I still recommend getting a brake controller and using it. It will make your towing experience much safer.

Depending on trailer weight, a brake controller is more than just recommended, it's the law, there's some states where if it's over 1000# trailer brakes are REQUIRED to operate on their roads. I don't think anyone ever regretted being able to stop better, so there's really no down side to getting a brake controller, lol
  • I have a 2012 Jeep G.C. Laredo, 4x4, with the 3.6L. It has been trouble free. I wouldn't hesitate to tow a pup with it.

  • I tow a 3500# (loaded) hard sided camper with a Jeep Liberty, if I can manage that you should be able to easily manage a pup with the bigger Grand Cherokee.
  • I occasionally tow 2000lbs with my Durango with the 3.6. No trailer sway, no brakes, and it's no problem.
  • Definitely the JGC will handle a popup with ease. My Highlander is lighter weight and has shorter wheelbase and about 20 HP less than the JGC, yet I have towed cargo trailers and a travel trailer with it for over 100K miles. With either tow vehicle, a 2000 lb popup is almost like nothing back there.
  • So, I am a Jeep engineer. The answer is yes absolutely! That vintage JGC can go up to a 6500# TT if you really wanted to.
