2013 Ford 3/4 ton vs ton GAS

If you have the choice, get the 1 ton.
If you're dead set on a 6.2 Ford gasser to pull a decent size 5ver, please do yourself a favor and drive one with a good load behind it before buying.
It's a pretty anemic engine, power wise. Like plan on 2nd gear wound up at 5000rpms going 40 mph up EVERY hill, even the little ones.

Before someone refutes this, realize I just took my new (company truck) F250, 6.2, 3.73's from WA to AK towing a 2 place enclosed sled trailer with about 1000lbs in the truck bed. Less than 5k lbs total load and trailer.
Alot of the northern roads were bad so took it slow for the most part.
Got 8mpg and it was gutless going up hills. Little hills were an immediate drop to 3rd gear. Bigger hills were 2nd gear wound up. And no high altitude either. All 4k ft or bleow.

Same drive again with my diesel, grossing close to 18k between the camper and a trailer. Much worse aerodynamics, waay more weight, got 12.2mpg overall and only had to drop 'er out of 6th gear due to EGT's or road too curvy to go 60mph.

What are all the boys with the 1 tons going to think when you pull in with a 3/4 ton and then not a diesel. They will never talk to you again.

Perhaps if we knew what you plan to tow/haul and where you want to travel with your truck, we could provide better suggestions. If you plan to stay in the plain states where there are not too much elevation changes or height, you can get by with a smaller engine. If you plan to visit the mountain ranges to either side of you, a small engine could do the job as long as it is on occasion but will struggle. I climb at least 3000' to go east or south with a GCW of 18-20K lbs four times a year and would not enjoy that drive without my diesel. The trips I make weighing under 12K lbs at sea level-1000' could easily be handled by the smallest gasoline engine offered.

BTW: I will be coming down I-29 through IA next week and that will be a breeze compared to crossing the Continental Divide.

Interesting observation; I have a neighbor who went from an 05 Ram 5.9L to a 2012 6.2L gasser F250 and he swears up-and-down that the 6.2L F250 pulls just as strongly & at the same speeds up grades as his CTD did, albeit at higher RPM and burning more fuel. And he tows here in AZ, where big, long, nasty climbs are the norm. There are things he says he misses about his Ram but he swears that engine performance isn't one of them.

He had the auto in his Ram though; your G56 might put power to the ground in a more perceptible manner.

I know I'd be getting a F-350 SRW 4x4 if I went ton truck, but how do I know what the paylod is as there are so many options on teh GVWR (lbs) column? I'd get a crew cab also.

And, what is the gas mileage difference between the 3/4 ton adn the ton gas with same specs?

The truck in my sig is a fully loaded, king ranch, crew cab, 4x4.

Payload -- 3493# per the door sticker. Just to give you an idea.


You would not notice any difference in mpg's from a 250 / 350, as they are the same engine, same gearing, (assuming it is), really the same truck, just a little heavier which really will not effect mpg at all.

My Laredo 6.7L 4WD Crewcab sticker says 3176. That is the added weight of the diesel and 4WD so it's lower than the above 6.2L gasser.

I have to call B.S. on the 6.2L not having power. It sucks the fuel for sure! But it is no dog by any means. Here are two videos to watch. Both F350's, one is the 6.2L w/ 4.30 gears and the is 6.7 Powerstroke w/ 3.55 gears towing a 15,000lb trailer up a 18% grade. I have to say I'm very impressed with the 6.2L!!

My 4x4 extra cap 6' bed pulled our 7000 lb. TT from keys in Florida to top of Alaska and back getting 10 MG on freeway towing at 65 miles per hour in 6 it wood change to 5 on grades but that is the gear I should have bean in to start with. I newer had to get to second or have problems climbing any hill. Ran Florida to Texas solo at 70-75 getting 15.5MG return at 75-80 got 14.8 MG.
