2013 Ford Diesel

Is the 2013 Ford Diesel a good engine, I need it to pull my 36' 5th /w. Looking to move up. How about the 2015 are they any better. Thanks for any help.

  • I have not seen the 2013 yet don't know what condition it's in or the mileage. I will see it next week.

    Thanks for the input......
  • 2015 version has some significant upgrades. The engine was introduced in 2011 models.
  • I have a 2012 F350 6.7 diesel (as noted above 2011 was the first year). Engine is great with a lot of power and pulls my 35' 5er great, even over Colorado mountain passes. 27,000 miles and no problems except for a bad exhaust gas temp sensor. But that had nothing to do with the engine.
  • As others have said the 6.7L has been a reliable engine with good driveability/performance.

I have owned Ford's with 6.0Ls, 6.4Ls, and 6.7Ls and the 6.7L drives circles around the two International diesels. Relative to a 2013 vs. a 2015, unless you are at altitude you probably will not notice a big difference in performance between a 2013 and 2015 for everyday driving. The 2015 does have more torque and a larger turbo for performance at altitude so if you load the truck to its maximum capability or frequently drive in Colorado you may notice a difference in performance, but in my opinion not enough to justify the additional cost of a new 2015 over a used 2013.

No, the first year was 2011. Lot's of people have used the 6.7L Diesel now, me included, with no serious problems at all. The worst that happened to me on my 2012 was a blown hose fitting on the engine. In the wilds of New Mexico of course.

There are occasional reports of fuel pump problems but they seem to be rare. People who did have a problem screamed loudly and I don't blame them. But I haven't heard of another case in over a year now. Maybe Ford is dealing with the issue more responsibly.
  • The engine itself is great. However there is a somewhat problematic fuel pump on the 2011-2014 models. Mind you, I used to own a 2011, and enthusiastically educated myself all I could find about said problems. And, in the end, appears anywhere from 97% to 99% of the units sold since 2011 have been problem free.

Good news, except if you are one of the small percentage of owners that do have problems.

I understand one of the changes, besides additional horsepower to the 2015, was a redesign of the fuel pump.

So I would surely go with 2015 if possible.

Power wise mine was great! Hauled and towed my stuff just excellently. I was going to trade trucks this year anyway, as I normally do every four years or so. Then made the mistake of stopping at a dealership last fall, just to look you know, and ended up driving away in my new truck.

So now I drive a new Ram. But, should the urge hit me to trade again, I would not hesitate on a 2015 or newer Ford with the 6.7L diesel. I really think Ford has created a superb engine with this one, putting to rest the fiasco that the 6.0L and 6.4L Navistar engines created for them.

OH, and the 6.7L is a Ford built engine, not manufactured by Navistar for them.
  • 2011 was the first year for the 6.7L, which has turned out to be a great engine. I have a '13 F350 and love it!! Better fuel economy than the '08-'10s, more power and a 6 speed transmission. Love the 6.7s. Although I am not totally brand loyal, I love these trucks.
  • I've had a 2011 F250, with plenty of engine, but not enough suspension. Bought a 2014 F350 DRW that pulls so much better I was shocked. To answer your question as far as 2013 it will be an excellent truck as long as you get one setup for your potential load. The 6.7 Ford engine is excellent. I've had zero problems between the 2 trucks. As far as the 2015 I'm not sure if there is any advantage. Maybe a little more HP. I do not see the need for anymore HP.
