2013 Ford PowerStroke 6.7L

I'm starting to 'kick the tires' and I really like the F-350 Ford.
What are you guys hearing about their new 6.7L PowerStroke?
Did they get it right this time?

    The good is, this engine is waaaaaaaaaaay better than the 6.0 or 6.4 Nav engines. All in all they seem to be a pretty good engine.

    The bad?...........well:

    Lots and lots and lots of turbo problems. This one is very troubling because it seems as if Ford can't fix the problem.


    Some HPFP and fuel system problems. Not too many of these but BIG, BIG bucks to fix! :E And most of the time Ford will blame you and you will have to pay for it. :E


    Quite a few valve problems.


    More than I like to see engine failures. I think most of these were from valve failures though so if they fixed the valve problems most of the catastrophic engine failure will go away. It seems like the valve problems are going away so maybe they fixed that problem.
    Ford also has some maintainence requirements that the other two do not..

    Antifreeze needs to be tested often using the proper kit.. There is more than one available, and even the dealers sometimes get it wrong. This actually has a message that pops up on the DIC.

    The fuel filter needs to drained IIRC every 3 weeks

    Ford STRONGLY recommends in writing that you use their PM 22 fuel additive religiously. Some have even had to sign a paper about this on delivery.

    And Ford seems to have forgotten how to make a radiator that doesn't leak. And they are VERY proud of the replacements that they sell. Which still leak.



    Some incorrect information provided here by Huntindog:
    1. Fuel filter does not need to be drained every 3 weeks per Fords Owners guide supplement.
    2. Ford does not require PM22 per Fords Owners guide supplement. I know of no one who had to sign a document including my own purchasing experience.
    3. Antifreeze is mainly tested for Nitrates because a lot of quick lube shops tend to top off the radiater fluid and chances are they will top off with the incorrect antifreeze. ELC coolant testing is a common practice including CAT.

    Turbo problems are mostly on the derated C&C engines, so if you are getting an F250 or F350 you most likely will not have the issue.

    HPFP is usually related to some type of fuel contamination, such as accidentally putting DEF in the tank, or large amounts of water. I also think Ford had some changes made late in 2012 that seems to be helping with this issue, but I have no proof. Regardless it has a low rate of occurrence, but it is large dollars if it happens. Recently a user posted that Ford covered his under warranty, so that is a plus.

    The valve problems are mostly limited to the earlier manufactured 6.7's and this issue also seems to be resolved.

    The sky is not falling with the 6.7

    I really like mine so far. I have 18k miles on it. I love how it tows and the interior is comfortable.

    I think the 2 issues that bother me more are the death wobble and the radiator. These two issues seem way more common than the above list.

    The good is, this engine is waaaaaaaaaaay better than the 6.0 or 6.4 Nav engines. All in all they seem to be a pretty good engine.

    The bad?...........well:

    Lots and lots and lots of turbo problems. This one is very troubling because it seems as if Ford can't fix the problem.


    Some HPFP and fuel system problems. Not too many of these but BIG, BIG bucks to fix! :E And most of the time Ford will blame you and you will have to pay for it. :E


    Quite a few valve problems.


    More than I like to see engine failures. I think most of these were from valve failures though so if they fixed the valve problems most of the catastrophic engine failure will go away. It seems like the valve problems are going away so maybe they fixed that problem.

    I took delivery of mine about 2 months ago. I ordered it after I researched everything I could about them and the new motor.

    The only thing I found that worried me has to do with wear issues of the HPFP and resulting damage. The HPFP supposedly needs better lubricity then you get from the diesel fuel that's available here in the good ole U.S. of A. Actually the REAL problem seems to be Ford's response to resulting warranty claims.

    You can read up on this by searching this site or the internet. I am not sure at all how prevalent the problem is. But with the instant news we have these days, anything posted on the net catches world wide attention and can look like a much larger problem then it really is. I did not judge it to be enough of a problem to dissuade me from buying the Ford.

    To combat the possible problem, I am using the Ford diesel additive (PM-22A) in EVERY tank. That may be a good idea anyway. And I also bought the extended warranty that covers everything for 7 years. Should I have to do this ? No, but I'm treating the cost as insurance just like you have for your house, etc. I'm covering myself so I won't have a problem should something happen. And the out of pocket cost to repair anything on one of these trucks - engines or any of the electronics inside the cab - after it's outside of the factory warranty would absolutely ruin my day. I would also expect those costs would be same whether you drive a Ford or a GM or a Ram.

    Oh yah, I really, REALLY like the truck.

    This is what I was afraid of.
    It's too bad. I was hoping to go Ford.

    Lol, I've been looking too. they are nice. I think by far the "best finished" truck out there...

    My wife would lynch me! lol :E


    I have always liked the Tonka Truck look of the Ford.
    Most of my family drive GMC's so I thought I would be different.
    My biggest concern is if they have solved their engine problems.

    I have a 2011 F450.

    The truck is not as beefy as the 2008-2010 models. I think Ford tried too hard to make it nice and cushy versus being a heavy duty truck.

    But it still can handle pretty much any camper out there. My whole rig when we're completely loaded up weighs a GCW close to 29,000 lbs.. The 6.7L handles it easily and laughs at hillclimbs.

    Over two years now, 21,000 miles and zero problems.
