2013 RAM 3500 Diesel 4x4 Dually and KYB Shocks Update

This is a FYI for 2013 RAM 3500 4x4 diesel dually owners.

I've wanted a set of KYB's since the day I purchased the truck. In my experience all OEM shocks need to be change out in about one year.

I finally got someone at KYB to go into some detail as to why my shock application is still not available.

I will define one acronym for you ahead of time that explains everything...ROI, return on investment... Until their are enough of this particular vehicle in distribution, I will have to wait.

FROM KYB:

We only have so many engineering hours available in our budget and must dedicate our resources where the maximum ROI is available. In this case there were five different front shocks used on the 2013 3500 4X4 with diesel engine. As of August 2014 there were only 12,907 registrations combining Chassis cab & Non-Chassis cab models. This registration figure is for the USA & CN combined. We recently purchased January 1, 2015 registration data and the total is now 17,971.

We will introduce parts for this vehicle, but I’m unable to give a date at this time.

I hope this helps clarify the delayed release of this application.

I currently have Bilsteins on the truck, they provide a great ride when the camper is off the truck, but are much too soft when it is on. I've heard the KYB's are stiffer.

Rancho 9000's are also not available for this truck only their 7000 series shocks.
  • Thanks for the input Jefe, I LOVE DV, driven almost all it's dirt roads WITHOUT my current truck camper.

I just posted my decision to go with a set of FOX racing shocks....take read if you like.
  • I went with the Bilstein 5100 in all four corners. My issue was with the stock front shocks. The front would bounce over sudden drops in the road. The 5100 solved this problem.

Im thinking of adding an extra shock up front to handle the weight of the Cummins..
  • too bad. I've always liked the KYB's ever since I had them on my 70's 4WD's. You might try to add one extra set of shocks only to the rear axle. This is what we did back in the day on off-road heavyweights. The weight on the front axle does not change much so less need for double front shocks.
There are kits available for welding on shock mounts, top and bottom that will accept, I'm thinking, Rancho 9K's with all that adjusting. I was thinking of doing this on Cabeza de Vaca for more control when off-road. I could have used them this past week in Death Valley on some of the roughest trails I've ever trod. T.R. to follow.

  • A funny thing is that I had the same problem when I had a 2000 Chev 2500 Express van. I could get OEM front shocks only. I went through a couple of sets of rears, but a set of fronts a year. No one made aftermarket fronts that fit.
