Just didn't want dealer to chase me down a rabbit hole
Mine is a manual trans and I'm generally doing about 1000~1200 RPM's at 30. Why would you want it to do more? And what is poor mileage?
Not much you can do. Excessive clatter can mean injection pressures are out of wack and without proper equipment, it's impossible to check. I would just make sure they actually have a diesel tech or are farming it out to one. It's good to get it checked out though before damage occurs.
Don't know what to say about your ham. ;)
Unless it's got 150K or more miles, probably not valve adj and they don't make that much noise when they need it anyway from what I've seen with the few of them I've adjusted. There are a number of items in the fuel system that can make it sound like an old clattering diesel and some of them can cause excessive pressures or damaging spikes. I think getting it to a good mechanic quickly is smart. The hard part is finding one.
