I hate the dealer but that is where I am headed for an electrical issue that makes my volume and switches not function. But, my concern is that I am getting poor mileage, I hear a lot of clattering, and just going down the road at 30 mph the truck is doing 1000 rpm so I switch it manual to get them up. Anything come to mind that I can do for a diagnostic so they don't go fishing and entering deeper into my wallet?

Mine is a manual trans and I'm generally doing about 1000~1200 RPM's at 30. Why would you want it to do more? And what is poor mileage?Not much you can do. Excessive clatter can mean injection pressures are out of wack and without proper equipment, it's impossible to check. I would just make sure they actually have a diesel tech or are farming it out to one. It's good to get it checked out though before damage occurs.Don't know what to say about your ham. ;)

My advice is go to a Ram dealer for your repair.

It has plenty of power, and pulling up grade at 1800 and with the load it sounded like something was going to fall off. I was thinking valve adjustment. Mileage has gone down towing or not. Just didn't want dealer to chase me down a rabbit hole

Just didn't want dealer to chase me down a rabbit holeUnless it's got 150K or more miles, probably not valve adj and they don't make that much noise when they need it anyway from what I've seen with the few of them I've adjusted. There are a number of items in the fuel system that can make it sound like an old clattering diesel and some of them can cause excessive pressures or damaging spikes. I think getting it to a good mechanic quickly is smart. The hard part is finding one.
