Really, the only way you can tell is if you slow down and happen to be at a stop light and you catch a whiff of diesel. You tend to get some fumes when the engine is regenerating. Otherwise, you'll probably never know it's being done. Seems like the Cummins motor doesn't use as much fuel to regenerate when it actually does it.
Or if you get an aftermarket OBD reader with all the fancy gauges and such, then you can actually monitor the regeneration events.
