Doesn't hauling a trailer load the lower gears? I'm quite sure the turbo(s) are spooled up most of the time I'm towing. And going up the mountain in 2nd or third with the trailer, the turbos are definitely working.
You seem to be more concerned with unloaded performance, especially from a standing stop. You also notice some turbo lag, whereas I don't, probably because I accelerate slowly from a standing stop.
You're are right, the turbos will be spooled up most of the time while towing, except while taking off from a stop. You'll still get turbo lag there.
1/2 ton trucks are usually an all around vehicle being primarily a daily driver. So unloaded performance is about 90 to 95% of the time the truck is on the road. I don't drive aggressive but I don't drive slow and cause traffic problems either. The idea is to get going with safe acceleration while doing the speed limit.
I guess no one read the links I've provided. Everyone's questions about the dyno are pretty much answered in the articles and from a Ford Engineer.
