Curious on an update of how the OP is liking his 6.4 after a few months. I'm looking at one now and am really liking it. My current Dmax is horrible on fuel, i do lots of short trips since i live and work in town, and fuel is expensive. I only tow about 3-6 times a year and even then it is only a 8500lb 5er. had a GM 6.0 with the 6-speed, but wanted a diesel. Now i'm regretting it.
What is your PRO's and CON's now that you have had it several months. I need to justify the extra cost on my monthly payment.
Hello fellow Kentuckian!
I enjoy my truck more now than when I bought it. It's the only vehicle that I've ever bought that I have absolutely NO buyers remorse. A fellow firefighter asked me the other day if my truck has ever been dirty :-) Of course...I just keep it clean. Got my first scratch 2 days ago. Neighbor kid was riding his bike and nicked my truck with his handlebars. Man I was pissed...never did like that kid anyway.
But for your question...
PROS -
Engine - Plenty of power for my needs. Engine runs like a Swiss watch.
Transmission - I have the 68RFE. Ram has really done their homework with this transmission. It holds gears, doesn't hunt, and downshifts down hills to keep speed. You rarely have to use the brakes using cruise control. And if you anticipates your stops you don't need much manual braking effort to stop. The downshifts will slow the truck brilliantly.
Fuel Economy - Fuel economy is good for a 3/4 pickup truck. My numbers basically mirror IB's. Except I do a little better towing. 10-11 on the flats, 9 in the hills. If you live an area with a lot of flat land and you drive it easy you can get really good fuel economy. MDS does a great job unloaded and on the flats.
Brakes - The brakes are excellent. It doesn't take much pressure to stop the truck. The integrated trailer brake is easily adjusted and works flawlessly.
Quality - The quality of the interior components is on par with the 2013 Tundra I came from. The knobs and switches are crisp and well made.
Serviceability - This truck is easy to work on yourself. The engineers made access to maintenance items easy to access. Little things like a built in drain/funnel for directing oil from the oil filter when removed.
Payload - My truck has over 3200 lbs of payload. The rear coil springs handle loads comfortably. I never have to worry about running out of payload.
Towing - The stability of my Ram while towing my TT is excellent. The combination of handling/feel of the steering and the trucks ability to handle the weight of the TT are nearly perfect. Towing my 3000 lb runabout boat is the closest I have ever felt to the proverbial "you don't even know it's there."
I could go on and on with the things I like about my truck. Basically everything. That said there are some things that I would like to change in my next Ram, just options I would select.
I have the vinyl floors. They are AWESOME. The vinyl floors are perfect for a truck that's to be used for camping, boating, etc. When I brought the truck home my wife looked at the vinyl floor and was like wtf. She absolutely LOVES them now. So easy to clean. No worry about muddy footwear after a hike, wet feet after boating, etc.
I said all that to lead into one of the things I would change. I would definitely want leather seats next time. My kiddos can't seem to keep the cloth clean. I initially had a no eating in the truck rule, but too many long trips and eventually I gave in.
I would also get the Uconnect 8.4 system. I am a techie and I would love to have the extra "toys" in the cab. I would keep the bench seat if you can get it in leather. I have had to use the middle seat in the front a few times and it's great to have when needed.
I have just over 6000 miles on my truck, over 3000 of those towing my TT. Not much I would change. I love the truck.
I am a techie also. I work in IT actually. The one i'm looking at is a SLT, Crew, 4x4. It comes with the Uconnect 8.4 which is fabulous. Only issue is it has the 20" rims. I'd rather have smaller due to cost of tires.
Just have to get them down a little more on price.
Check out Bob Allen Ram in Danville. It will be a long drive for you but they will do you right on the price...
