For a 16,000# trailer a new one ton srw is more than capable. And I would take the 6k savings. If you had to replace the transmission at 150k miles you would still be money ahead!
I agree about the weight the new SRW can handle, but looking at my 8 year old ratings I have about 800 lbs more GVWR and 2300 lbs more RAWR than THIS Chevy 3500 SRW. I think I'd draw the line at about 3k lbs for pin weight unless you found some higher rated tires.
