  • Not sure what the test was all about. Was it to show that the little 6.0 could get 20,000 pounds to the top of the hill while using an enormous amount of fuel? It accomplished that. Otherwise it only demonstrated that they did not have the best vehicle for such a task. The fact that the driver did not know how to take advantage of the manual transmission feature makes me wonder about their expertise. I have a 6.0 and would not consider towing/hauling 14,000 pounds with it.
  • As for the shifting I noticed that when it did finally shift the rpms were up near 5500. Shifting any earlier may have put the engine at red line which the computer would hold below and the truck may have lost speed as a result.

The gear spread is too wide for the hill and load they had.

The newer transmissions coming will help correct that. The new 8 speed gives more gears to help keep the engine in its power band.

That is why the big guys have many gears. The diesels they have, have narrow power bands which requires many gears.

Someday we may find CVT transmissions in everything which will totally cure this problem.

It is even possible the 3.73 rear end would have been the better choice for this particular hill climb. It would have given them about 4 mph more speed in that lower gear. I suspect when they were in the lowest gear the engine was in a rpm limit condition.
  • That was about the only complaint but it was a big one to him. Ex or still a truck driver that can't shift doesn't seem likely to me but it was a full throttle test so it is what it is.

  • Yep he could have used the little toggle switch on the side to change te gears for his needs but choose not to. And then went on complaining about it. U know a little common sense goes a long way.... The switch is there for a reason...I use mine always and never complain about pulling the grades...
  • The driver didn't like the fact the trannie didn't shift down fast enough. On our 2001 8.1 would down shift very quickly. A little faster than I liked but it wasn't a big deal. Our 05 duramax wants to hold a gear longer than I want it to so it is an easy fix to hit the D button and go down the 4th and not lose any speed. Holding the throttle to the floor is for testing only. RV'rs are smart enough to drive smart most of the time .

Wow, almost impressed $50,000 2015 3500, and my 01 can pull the same load!

Rated GCVWR just north of 20,000#, my 01 is 20,000#.

I would take the '15 Chevy over your '01 anyday. :W
