You have to take trans ratios into account when looking at rear end ratios.

A 6L90 with 3.42 is equivalent of a 4L85 with 5.54 diff ratio. 4.02 1st gear vs 2.482.

To call a 2008 6.0L gasser (4L85) with 5.54 ratio "worthless" is a bit of an exaggeration...

Just sold my 2014 duramax and bought a 2020 2500hd 6.6 gas. I pull a 8000 lb trailer. The diesels are ok until the warranty runs out. Then even routine maintenance gets deep in your pocket. I have not pulled with it yet, only 300 miles on it, but I am impressed so far. I may be disappointed, but time will tell.

I had an '11 and a '15 HD 6.0 and I thought it pulled very well. I have weighed it from time to time and combined 31K. I took them over my passes (except Teton) and was very happy with the performance of the 6.0. Never pulled a half ton to compare. I would just say that it might be that skid steer your pulling weighs more than 5K. There are of course many different sizes but only the smallest models weigh 5K. My tracked machine weighs over 10K (CASE TR340) and my wheeled machine weighs 9K (CASE SV340). Perhaps that is the reason the 6.0 doesnt feel as strong by comparison.

Maybe the few I've drove aren't quite right. They've been 2016-2018 6.0, 4x4 crew cab, stripper work trucks.
Havent pulled Vantage with one, but that grade coming up Westbound is probably the biggest test in this state.
Going up White Pass from 123 to the top or up I 90 Snoqualmie, I've pulled the same or very similar loads with my 2016 1/2 ton 5.3 and a couple 6.0 3/4 tons and for some reason it feels like the little 1/2 ton pulls as well.
4klb deckover with a 5000?lb skid steer on it. Moderate load, the 3/4 tons feel like they don't have any more snort than the 5.3. I really want to like the, and otherwise they're great trucks, but average at best for towing (in my limited experience).

^ Yes “worthless” was perhaps too egregious of a descriptor and was certainly not a personal affront on you or your vehicle. Apologies there.
Geography does play a large role in what works well and what doesn’t for sure. Even here in WA which does not have real high altitude and for the most part “mild” grades on mountain highways, the new (and older) 6.0s seem to s uck more wind than comparable gassers from the competition.
That said, they are generally very reliable trucks.

I was able to find my build on a lot 3500HD Diesel Denali 2020.

The 4.10 is only available on the 6.6 gas engine 3500. Why they do offer it in the 2500 is ridiculous. Why the don’t offer a extended cab, long bed 3500 is also crazy, a crew cab for me is unnecessary.

So I drive a worthless to you 2017 Express. It has the 6.0/6L80/3.42 combination. My trailer empty is 8200. I frequently take my own 80 gallons of water.

I tow this in Michigan. There are not mountains. It gets me where I need to go.

I might not win the races, but it finishes just fine.
