2015 Chevy 2500HD bed height

Was looking at some new (2015) Chevy 2500 HD 4x4 trucks and they seem tall. I rough measured (since in the car and no tape measure) the height of the bed and when I got home found that the bed height is about 1.5-2" taller than my F-250.

Has anyone had problems with bed clearance with the newer Chevys pulling fifth wheel?

Pulling a 32' Salem toyhauler fifth wheel.

  • When I first hooked up my 5er to our 2014 Ram 2500 it looked like it was at least 2 inches higher than my 2005 was. After hooking up I measured and the 5er is slightly nose high but no clearance problems on the bed rails. It pulls great. Little higher tires and a tad deeper bed on the newer trucks I guess. I did lower the hitch down one hole.
  • I replaced my 2013 GMC 2500HD with a new 2015 2500 HD 2 months ago. Same configuration right down to the rims and tires and I noticed the '15 looked to be maybe 2 inches taller at the rear of the bed. I had to adjust my hitch down to get the trailer level, but I still have plenty of clearance. I mentioned this in a Duramax forum and it seemed as if I was the only one on the forum who'd noticed. 'Kinda nice to see someone else has noticed. BTW, I pull a '14 Jayco Eagle.
  • As said it CAN be an issue. Every trailer is different but overall the trailer manufacturers build them higher at the hitch point to follow the truck Height trends eventually but it does take a few years for them to catch up. As a for instance my 2009 2500 hd is dead level towing my 2014 crusader with 6.5 inch clearance. A new GM hd truck I'd be looking at adding something to 5th to get it higher to maintain clearance.
  • Great question, OP. I own a 2014 2500 Ram and am looking at moving from a TT to a 5th wheel. I've asked several RV hitch installation places and I think I even started a thread around here. Since I'm not seeing 3 threads here every day about clearance issues with new trucks, I'm guessing (hoping) it's not a problem.

I agree, these new trucks sure seem to be quite a bit taller than the old ones.
  • My FIL's 15' 2500 Chevy squats quite a bit when the pin is put on it. It squats more than his 2003 2500 did so it actually when loaded tows pretty flat. His 2015 looks really jacked up in the rear when unloaded.
  • Been doing some measuring myself on the dealer lots. Ford F250 comes in at 55" Chevy 2500HD at 59". Current truck '04 2500HD is 55" and at that height I have 6" of clearance and rig tows dead level.
I would measure your current truck and clearance from top of the bed rails to bottom of fiver and then determine if the new trucks higher bed rails will be an issue. Some have had to have new perch springs welded on the fiver's undercarriage to get the clearance. Your's may have extra hanger holes which would allow you to raise the trailer without addtional welding.
