Bigger turbo doesn't mean better. Many guys install smaller turbo's for better performance.
Just curious, who is installing smaller turbos on the new trucks to gain performance?
A smaller turbo spools quicker and reaches higher rotation speeds for a given fueling level because it has lower drive pressure. The big three have gone up and down in size over the year because of many different reasons including controlling boost, emissions and drivetrain longevity. These changes were often made at the expense of performance so guys would either alter the existing turbo with a new housing or replace it entirely. Unless they add lots of fuel, a bigger turbo is a detriment to performance. Even then it often causes smoke at heavy throttle and low boost conditions. So as you can see it's a trade off when it comes to sizing and manufacturers play around a lot with it.
I know that. I just have not heard of anyone changing to a smaller turbo on a modern stock engine because the performance was off due to too big.
X2, you just don't go to a smaller than stock turbo to get more performance. Air flow and fuel flow is the name of the HP game and to get more air flow you need a bigger turbo.
The big question is, is the 15 Blue Oval going to put out more HP? I say yes; but that is just a WAG. Despite what people say on here, HP sells and people love bragging rights.
