- jerem0621Explorer III'd go for the 3.5 Eco...JMHO.
I would consider a 2.7 for a 6,000 ish GVWR trailer but would opt for the 3.5 with max payload and max tow options if any heavier. Again...JMHO
Thanks!

The 2.7 may well pull the trailer, but going is only half of the trip. The 2 biggest differences I noticed going from a 5.4 F150 to the 3.5 EB F150 were the huge increase in pulling power, but the lack of engine braking going down hills. I'm on the brakes much more than with the V8. I'm no engineer, and some may show me that I'm wrong, but I would not want to reduce the displacement any more than I already have.
I've got 2 Ecoboosts - one in the car and one in the F150. Both have less engine braking than a naturally aspirated engine. Both seem to have nothing until it gets into 2nd gear. Although the Tow/Haul mode in the F150 is outstanding.
And, yes the F150 is capable. It's about where the 3/4 tons were 10-15 years ago.
My 6.0L Power Stroke is no different. You HAVE to use T/H in order to use engine/transmission/exhaust braking. - itguy08Explorer

That would not do for MY towing requirements. You will have to run the numbers for your situation. - SamsonsworldExplorer

Let's just say if I had a choice between a 5.3l chevy, 5.7l ram, 5.7l tundra, 5.0l ford or 2.7l ford, I'd pick the little ecoboost. - rbpruExplorer III had no problems towing a 6000 lb. TT with my F-150 3.5 E-Boost 4x4 in both the Ozarks and the Rockies. It had plenty of power and good handling. I am one of those folks who drive 60 mph and usually take the non-interstate routes.
However, the CAT scales showed I was at, if not a bit over at times, the max cargo or the TV axle ratings; depending on the amount water in the Fresh, Gray and Black tanks.
While we would all like to have a trailer towing beast, my TV also has to be affordable and serve my day to day needs. At most my towing represents 25% of my annual mileage and sometimes less than that.
Personally, unless the smaller E-Boost is a remarkable breakthrough in technology, or I was hauling less than 5000 lbs. TT weight, I would go with the bigger E-Boost engine.
The towing specs should tell you if the engine/towing package options on your TV will handle your proposed load. Also keep an eye on the max cargo limit. - SamsonsworldExplorerI think you probably got to the top of the hill going so slow with the 5.4l it just SEEMED like you had more engine braking coming down the other side. :B ;)

- vanreeverExplorerI should clarify, I am careful about what I pack. The wife on the other hand thinks she needs everything we have in our house in our camper as well lol. I love my F150 and definitely agree it is very capable.
- SamsonsworldExplorerI would like a 3/4 ton too but my ecoboost has towed my 8k lb dry TT over 4500 miles now. It's a capable truck.
....and I load the hell out of mine.
