2015 Ford Expedition
So my weekend spent with the 2015 Chevy Suburban got me interested in checking out the 2015 Ford Expedition EL which is a great option for pulling a TT with a NEW full sized SUV.
Here is some preliminary research I have come up with and want to share. Nothing new or groundbreaking in my research I just have pulled out some of the important bits that may help someone thinking about buying one.
Common stuff to all 2015 Expeditions
3.5 EcoBoost
365 HP at 5,000 RPM's
420 lb/ft of torque at 2,250 RPM's
Available Rear Axle Ratios
3.15 - 2wd base
3.31 - 4x4 base and 2wd EL
3.73 - Optional on all models, Standard on 4x4 EL
Wheel Base
Expedition - 119 inches
Expedition EL - 131 Inches
Rear Overhang
Expedition - 48.3 inches
Expedition EL - 51.1 inches
(Note, gaining 12 inches of wheel base only increases overhang by 2.8 inches... affording an effective 9.2 inch wheelbase advantage to the Expedition EL)
Fuel Capacities
Expedition - 28 Gallons
Expedition EL - 33.5 Gallons
Curb Weights
Expedition
4x2 - 5,600 lbs
4x4 - 5,846 lbs
Expedition EL
4x2 - 5897 lbs
4x4 - 6103 lbs
Trailer Towing Capacities
Expedition without Heavy Duty Trailering Package
Expedition
3.15/3.31 Axle Ratio
2wd
GCWR - 12,300 lbs
Max Trailer Weight - 6,600 lbs
4wd
GCWR- 12,500 lbs
Max Trailer Weight - 6500 lbs
Expedition EL
3.73 Axle Ratio
2wd
GCWR - 12,500 lbs
Max Trailer Weight - 6,600 lbs
4wd
GCWR- 12,800 lbs
Max Trailer Weight - 6600 lbs
Expedition With Heavy Duty Trailering Package
3.15/3.31 Axle Ratio
2wd
GCWR - 14,900 lbs
Max Trailer Weight - 9,200 lbs
4wd
GCWR- 15,200 lbs
Max Trailer Weight - 9,200 lbs
Expedition EL
3.73 Axle Ratio
2wd
GCWR - 15,100 lbs
Max Trailer Weight - 9,200 lbs
4wd
GCWR- 15,300 lbs
Max Trailer Weight - 9,100 lbs
The only missing equation is the GVWR for the Expedition. That is a number that I have not found as of right now. I expect the GVWR will be around 7600 lbs.
Also, the receiver rating is not readily available as of right now for the new 2015 but I suspect its right around the 900-1000 lb rating that it has had for the last decade since this is basically a refresh and reboot. We will know more once receiver stickers start showing up.
just crunching the numbers around it seems like the real world max trailer weight + average family size is going to be about 7,000-8,000 lbs if you are careful on the tongue weight.
Here is the source for most of my research.
