In the case of a 2500, it's for ensuring the vehicle meets a certain class definition. In many states, if your GVWR is over 10,000 lbs, your cost to insure and register goes up. In some states it doesn't matter. That's practically the whole impetus for the existence of the 3/4 tons truck.
