I think everyone knows I am a RAM/CUMMINS guy but there is no way that truck got 14mpg on such a short run. Maybe run 300 miles the 14 would be possible. The Lie O Meter is more accurate under this condition.
This fill two click is a joke! Fill the SOB to the top until fuel starts running out that is the only way the test can be fair. Also same pump matters also, at least they did that.
I agree the capless fill is a joke! I will be getting a cap from Geno's for mine.
Kent get that missing tooth fixed!
X2
This is a sham of a mileage test! :S There is no way to get an accurate reading with a pump refill even from the same pump!! Then run at least 300 miles! Ten check the mileage.
Yes, another RAM/Cummins guy saying sham.
Easy to fill to the top of a 2nd gen RAM as you know. I alway do that and get accurate MPG every tank. On the 11 it was harder but possible this one sucks because if you retract the nozzle to let the bubbles vent and look to see the fuel filling the second flapper closed inside the fill tube and then fuel spills out!
So I may investigate removing the second flapper.
Bottom line the test was a farce. I would trust the lie O meter well before the two click method.
Some day I would love to tow the same road with another RVer from fill to fill to compare my 4:10's to RAM's 3:73's. I believe the 4:10's will get better mileage at my weight level of nearly 30K combined. - rhagfoExplorer III

2 mpg better for the Ram with the 4.10s. I guess you have to pay for the extra 55 ponies the Ford makes, even with the 3.73s.
Oh my!!! Fish is not going to like those figues. Let the excuses begin! :B
OMG...:B
Someone please dial 911 Fish choking. - buddyIamExplorerThey said mpg was 11.5 while they are filling up the Ford. I think they meant that that's what the Fords computer said.
they weren't really very clear - larry_barnhartExplorerWish the lie o-meter reading was shown on the ford.

I guess the capless fill is something you get use to, I've never had the first issue in filling with small or large pumps. I purchased a rubber cap at Lowes for about $2. Trim it up a little, set it over the fill lip, fits perfectly.. been using it for the last 21 months. Works great, covers the hole and seeing as how the ONLY time it's seen is when one opens the fuel door, I'm not going to spend a pile of money on something that is hidden 95% of the time.
DEF, depends....I've averaged as high as 1500 miles per gallon of DEF to as low as 1100 miles per gallon...(the gage is non-linear and will stay on full for a LONG TIME, but will give you a early warning as to how much further you can drive before you need to re-fill again...I've never gotten to that warning). I get my DEF at a truck stop about 5 miles from my house. Cost $2.69 cents a gallon last time I topped off my tank.
I too have the $2 diesel fuel cap on my truck. I like the feeling that when I fill my DEF, there's no way that stuff can get into my fuel tank. I've had mine since August 2013, first mod I did to my truck LOL.
As for DEF, the easy formula is that for every 100 gallons of diesel burned, you will burn somewhere between 1.5 and 2 gallons of DEF. Our trucks have a 5.5 gallon DEF tank. So whatever your average MPG is, times that by 300 and that's how often you'll be filling your tank roughly. So if I get 18 mpg on average, that means I've filled up my tank about every 5,400 miles which is close to my real life fillup cycle. I have 2 2.5 gallon containers that were used for DEF that I fill up at the truck stop along with my truck to keep a fresh DEF supply at home. Average shelf life of DEF around these parts in my garage would be about 2 years, so I figure a yearly supply of DEF is good enough (10.5 gallons total between the 2 containers and the tank in my truck). OMG...:B- jus2shyExplorerYeah, one issue I have is that they filled the tank till 2 clicks. Well, the machine clicks whenever it thinks the tank is full, and with diesels this is usually caused by the suds in diesel. Personally, I think they should had filled it until they could visibly see fuel, that's what I do with my truck. Mythbusters had the best setup of all though, They had an external container with a measured amount of fuel and delimiters to see how much fuel was consumed over a certain distance.
As for Regen, I feel that no modern truck should ever have an active regeneration when cruising at a constant speed on the highway. Exhaust should be hot enough to passively regen during a road trip. Just about all 3 of the manufacturers engineered their exhaust systems to pull this off. It's the up and down temps of city / stop to stop driving that causes a buildup in the DPF as exhaust temps aren't hot enough long enough to burn things off. - NC_HaulerExplorerI guess the capless fill is something you get use to, I've never had the first issue in filling with small or large pumps.
