We had a 2010 Duramax and 2011 F350. We traded them in on two 2016 F350's. The 2016 has a much better exhaust brake but the '11 did better on fuel. If I could do it again I would have got King Ranches with the 3:31 gears instead of the Platinums with the 3:55's. The 3:31 gets much better fuel economy. (I believe it is tuned different, because the rpm difference that the two trucks run at is minimal .... 3:31 with 18' rims vs the 3:55 with 20's.)
The difference in tire diameter is the reason for the different gearing. There should be no difference in fuel usage. The snow plow preparation package will get you the 3.55's with 18" tires, that is the best option for heavy towing.
