2016 ford ordering question

I ordered a 2016 Ford F-350 over six weeks ago and when I checked with the dealership I ordered it from, they informed me that the production still hasn't been scheduled. He then talked about regional allocations and possibly getting one allocated from a different region to speed things up. I have a brand new fifthwheel sitting in my driveway and I can't use it because of this delay. And to add insult to injury, I sent my friend to the same dealer to inquire about ordering a new f150. He ordered it two weeks ago and he already has a estimated delivery date. I didn't want a diesel so I had to order to get the color I wanted with the gas engine and 4.30 axle. Can someone explain how all this allocation and scheduling stuff works? In the past I have ordered vehicle and got them within 6 to 8 weeks.

  • HH, Like what others have said, all mfrs wait till they get a whole bunch of "X" type of vehicles to be ordered before they actually build them. Makes it easier for them to line up the options. Everything is just in time nowadays so at this time anything going into whatever is coming down the line just came into the plant within past day or so. All options are order specific. Once the plant gets done w/ whatever they are building now, it's very possible that the next batch could be 250's/350's. Based on when I ordered my last trucks, was told to expect it in about 12 weeks from order date at dealer. May be in sooner, but at least 3 months. Plus like what OP said, plants are just getting done re-tooling for the 2016's, so production should be ramping back up.
  • My dealer has been good and always checks into it for me, the hold up is the factory
  • What I am saying is some things are beyond dealer control.

The DW wanted a 2016 Expedition in a specific color and trim package. My dealer found 3 within 50 miles.
Dealer 1 - his "new" one turned out to have over 600 miles on it.
Dealer 2 claimed he already had a customer for it even though it was still showing in his inventory 2 weeks later.
Dealer 3 wanted a specific vehicle in trade, but my dealer did not have that in stock. Took nearly a week for my dealer to work a trade with them.
Dealers compete in sales numbers and are not particularly inclined to help another unless it helps themselves in return.

Request your dealer do a "dealer trade" with a dealer who has the truck you want. They do this in our area.

I think this works in most all areas. But first, finding a gasser F350 with a specific rear end and in a specific color would likely be a challenge. Don't find many gassers with higher end trim packages on the lots. And then his dealer must have something the dealer with the F350 is willing to trade for. That can also be a problem as I have found before.

As noted above, the problem is probably that production of 2016s is just getting under way. And production of F350s may not start as soon as other lines.

So you are saying they should not try to keep their customer happy?
  • I understand that but I have already seen 2016 superduty son the lot.

  • How fast you get your truck depends on the volume the dealer sells. I waited 8 wks. for my 15 350 from Sunrise Ford in Fontana, CA. I read on the forums Fowlerville Ford in MI. can get you a truck in like 4-6 wks
  • Your right in the middle of year end change over. Production does not automatically start when you order. It is placed in the hopper. When Ford decides to start building f350s is when your truck along with all the other f350 orders get placed into the build schedule. Could be built next week, next month, or next year. Fords call! Your choice is wait, look for a compreable stock model, or buy another brand.
