2016 Ram 1500 short driving impressions

I needed to go to OH to get some big trucks parts. My truck needs the parts so it was out of the question and my buddies F350 SRW was being used and the FIL F150 crew ecoboost was taken him so it was either the wife's crossover or rent a minivan. Around the weekends here the minivans prices skyrocket for renting so found I could rent a Ram 1500 5.7l for about $40 cheaper PER day. These are only available around airports so had to ride train about 1 hour to get it but it was worth it.

I got in and immediately had problems putting it in gear. Been driving older vehicles so long didn't know that the gear shifter are knobs on dash now so after pulling air a few times trying to pull the steering wheel mounted shifter down just turned the knob and away I went. Knowing it is apples to oranges comparison the cab is smaller than the superduty crew cabs I am used to but the ride was really smooth. Almost car like but it absorbed the potholes (is craters) and speed bumps well with no bouncing or thuds.

Getting this on the highway setting the cruise and hitting the mileage reset I thought something was broke when it registered 30+ mpg on a sort stretch of level highway at 65 mph. My wife's crossover barely gets that. Getting it loaded with family I drove it 400 miles through hills, stop and go traffic and otherwise at 75-80 mph and ended up with an avg of 22 mpg with 2 adults, 1 kid and 4 suit cases. I have never seen mileage like that with any half ton not even my diesels. Up to now I thought the hemi's were gas guzzlers getting the typical to me 16 mpg best on highway but over 800 miles of driving the consistent mileage was 21 mpg and I was loaded on the way back and flying when I could (running late).

My FIL ecoboost was the best mileage I have seen out of a half ton but on the highway with the 8 speed auto and cylinder deactivation the Ram appears to win hands down. Didn't get to tow with it because they remove the hitches but for my first experience with a Ram truck I am thoroughly impressed.
  • You probably rented a quad cab instead or a crew cab. They both have 4 traditional doors but the quad cab is much smaller.
  • That's interesting to hear about the cabin size. One of the reasons I purchased my 13 Ram quad cab was the cabin was more spacious than the 4-door f150, leg room, shoulder room, hip room was all better on the Ram. I'm almost 7 ft tall, so a seat that goes WAY BACK is very important.

I was behind the wheel of an 2016 F150 XL crew cab police truck for several hours this morning, and that cabin is cramped! Partly because of the emergency vehicle equipment, but also the stuff sticking out of the door, the huge plastic door handle was constantly poking me in the side, adn the drink holder / storage bin lower in the door poking at my leg. My legs are still sore from folding up under the dash, as the seat doesn't go nearly as far back as my Ram.

That said, the back seat area on this truck was very spacious, having to crawl in there to work on equipment. The seat took up a lot less room, maybe it's a special fleet vehicle seat but it's not the one piece molded plastic seat like the Explorer squad vehicles have
  • That is an impressive report. I would assume that with those MPG that the truck was a 4x2?
  • our 4x4 6' bed quad cab, 25MPG is not unusual. Towing I average 13. If one goes easy on the zoom pedal the 5.7 can make some impressive mileage numbers. Best mileage 28, worst 7 (towing up into the mountains). These are all actual numbers, I log all fill ups.

For comparison, same driver average 17MPG in our 2014 Jeep Wrangler.. however I flog the jeep pretty hard at times ;-)
  • Negative it had electronic selectable 4x4 and even had a neutral detent for towing all 4 down which is convenient for those who need toads.

  • I'll check the factory website pics to see which one I rented. I hope my positive reviews of Ram don't take away my Blue Oval fan club membership lol
Actually thought about one day checking out the new 1500 diesel because of the mpg's I have read in the reviews but after driving this I would lean towards this because if I load it out don't have to worry about someone misfueling it.
