For a real tow vehicle I'd prefer a 1 ton pickup. What I really hope for is that this diesel will carry over to the Landcruiser and Sequoia lines like the current 5.7 gas engine does. I'd have to pick one up if they do.

Amen! I'm on my 4th Land Cruiser and though I love the smoothness/quietness/lack of NVH of Toyota gas engines I'd be all over a diesel Land Cruiser if they ever decide to offer one in NA.
Sequoias are very nice but LCs bring things to the table (mainly off-road ability) that other large SUVs don't. - skyhammerExplorer

I have a Toyota/BMW/Yanmar diesel engine in my jet boat. It has Toyota,BMW and Yanmar stickers on it and it says made in Germany.
Same engine as in this. Yanmar runs seawater to cool the engine.
Twin turbo 470lbs ft of torque version.
My engine has a heat exchanger(radiator) to cool the engine. - skyhammerExplorer

It is a 4.46Liter, 32 valve V-8. Twin turbos and puts out 370HP, weighs about 950lbs.I don't know the toque #'s.
Would be a good engine for a truck.
Puffffff
I'll smoke ya. Hope you like H2O all over your bow :B
Just kidding, but its heavy IMO but should work out fine for you. How big of a boat? Now don't blow the wind out of my sail's and tell me it's a twin engine yacht :B
I do like water over my bow. The boat is a 24', Precision Weld with a 8' wide bottom.Made for big white water such as Hells Canyon. - JIMNLINExplorer III

Then add the fact that it is rated at 300HP and 500-600 torque. That's a lot of engine for a 1500 truck.
A engine with 500 ft lbs especially the diesel engine is too for much for any 1/2 ton trucks frame.
Remember when Dodge dropped the 160/400 5.9 Cummins in the 1st gen 3/4 ton trucks. Cracked frame issues popped up pretty quick after a few K miles when pulling heavy trailers.
IMO Toyota knows at some point they will have too compete in the HD pickup market. The 3/4 ton is the most popular of the HD pickups so naturally they would start at that point.
There are lots of off shore parts made for the 5.9 Cummins according to my area Cummins dealer anyway. That doesn't mean the OEM part at assembly is a off shore manufacturered part. - DSteiner51Explorer

Cummins also has a factory in China. I'm hoping it doesn't go there. We've lost enough good jobs here trying to compete with $0.17 an hour. Even Mexico can't compete with that.
The lube oil pump is made in China and the pistons are made in Brazil. At least that is what the boxes they come in state when rebuilding the engine with factory supplied parts. - HannibalExplorerCummins also has a factory in China. I'm hoping it doesn't go there. What makes you think that Cummins is made in the US??? I know for a fact the timing gears for Cummins are made in India. Along with parts from other countries that can build it cheaper. That is all Cummins cares about. Make it cheaper.
Exactly a lot of heavier Cummins diesels are built in England and India. England has Holset that does work on fuel injection and other issues wit the various engines. - RobertRyanExplorer

I get your point that the 5.0 Cummins, in some respects, may be more at home in a 3/4 ton truck. But, the reality is, a 5.0 Cummins 3/4 ton would be dead on arrival if it tried to compete with the larger 6.7++ liter 3/4 ton diesel offerings from the Big 3. It would be labeled a wannabe and wimpy.
Cummins in its advertising is saying this would be a great replacement for a V10 gas engine..Hmmm what engine could they be referring too? - JarlaxleExplorer II

You guys are trying to finish this old man off aren't you? Putting a Cummin's in a foreign piece of******is sacrilegious.
You mean like the Freightliner trucks it has been powering for 30 years? (Freightliner has been foreign-owned since 1980.) - JarlaxleExplorer II

Toyota builds many large heavy duty trucks with diesel engines, which are sold all over Asia. They have not chosen to change their engines to meet the US EPA requirements for the small market they would add. The US is only a part of the Toyota vehicle sales market, which is world wide. (as is Nissan's)
Pablum. I have DRIVEN medium-duty trucks built by Toyota...they sell them here as Hinos!
