Same engine as in this. Yanmar runs seawater to cool the engine.

Fine engine, but there are many fine diesel engines built today, many of which meet the EPA requirements, and many are from Japan. IMHO you won't find a better diesel than a Yanmar, a Kubota or Isuzu, so why would a Japanese company go for a US built engine?
Actually a staggering number of manufacturers outside NA.This is just ONE Manufacturer..count the number of Diesels they make.

You guys are trying to finish this old man off aren't you? Putting a Cummin's in a foreign piece of******is sacrilegious.
Well prior to Fiat taking over, the 5.9Litre engine was a co-development of Fiat/Cummins. Fiat has the "Tector", Cummins got the 5.9. Now 6.7. Fiats CNH has also a 6.7 litre engine as well. At on stage Fiat was making blocks for Cummins for the Engine. Difference between the Fiat "Tector" and the Cummins ISB is electronics - Adam_RExplorerFor a real tow vehicle I'd prefer a 1 ton pickup. What I really hope for is that this diesel will carry over to the Landcruiser and Sequoia lines like the current 5.7 gas engine does. I'd have to pick one up if they do.

It is a 4.46Liter, 32 valve V-8. Twin turbos and puts out 370HP, weighs about 950lbs.I don't know the toque #'s.
Would be a good engine for a truck.
Puffffff
I'll smoke ya. Hope you like H2O all over your bow :B
Just kidding, but its heavy IMO but should work out fine for you. How big of a boat? Now don't blow the wind out of my sail's and tell me it's a twin engine yacht :B - otrfunExplorer II

It would be awesome if they did, but no amount of marketing can overcome the reputation or image their 1/2 tons have already established. Why would Nissan and Toyota jump into the 3/4 ton market when sales for the Nissan Titan 1/2 ton are nearly non-existent, and the sales of the Toyota Tundra 1/2 ton are significantly below Toyota's long-range goals? So far, Nissan and Toyota have shown they don't have the heart to compete seriously in the 1/2 ton segment. The Nissan Titan hasn't changed in 10 years. The "new" 2014 Tundra has the same 7-8 year old drivetrain, a new grill/tailgate, and interior--that's it.
Nope I'll stand by my opinion, that both Nissan and Toyota are getting into the HD market, or at lest are coming out with a 2500 truck. They may not build a 3500 right out of the box but they are IMO going to do a 2500.
I get your point that the 5.0 Cummins, in some respects, may be more at home in a 3/4 ton truck. But, the reality is, a 5.0 Cummins 3/4 ton would be dead on arrival if it tried to compete with the larger 6.7++ liter 3/4 ton diesel offerings from the Big 3. It would be labeled a wannabe and wimpy.
IMO, with the new 5.0 Cummins diesel engine, both Nissan and Toyota have an opportunity to build a 1/2 ton, class leading diesel truck. As I've mentioned several times before, if they can obtain 2000 lbs. payload, 12,500 lbs. of tow capacity, and empty, low-mid 20's highway MPG, they will fill a huge void in the market---offer a class-leading, 1/2 ton truck and NOT a 3/4 ton wannabe---no excuses, no compromises--just a kick-ass, 1/2 ton truck.
For so many that are on the fence trying to choose between a big, 1/2 ton gasser, or a 3/4 ton diesel, Nissan and Toyota may just provide the choice they've been looking for.Perrysburg Dodgeboy wrote:
The new Cummins 5.0 has a Compacted Graphite Iron (CGI) block which should weigh about 20% less than standard iron block. It also has aluminum heads, so it might not be quite as heavy as we think. We'll see . . .
Anyone that thinks that V-8 Cummins is going in to a 1500 might want to rethink that opinion. Think about it, with the weight of a V-8 cast iron block they will have less payload then the Ram! Then add the fact that it is rated at 300HP and 500-600 torque. That's a lot of engine for a 1500 truck. - HannibalExplorer

The Tundra 5.7L already has the same HP and torque of the Ford Super Duty 6.2L. The only reason it doesn't have the same tow capacity of the Ford is the suspension. I had one and it pulled my 8K lb trailer just fine, but I wanted more payload. Tundra had 7 years to come up with a truck to compete with Ford and GM and they fell woefully short of the mark. They seem to be happy in the 1/2 ton market and i'm happy with my F250, so it's all good. I loved my Tundra, it was a great truck, but they lost me even if they build a HD truck. I didn't wait for them then and I won't wait for them now.
They do seem to be targeting a different audience. You don't know how bad I wanted to buy an American union built hybrid but the big three don't seem to be Focused on the hybrid market like Toyota. The Prius sets the benchmark for hybrids. Ford, Chrysler and GM set the mark for serious pickups. I'm happy with both of mine. - Bob_LandryExplorerThe Tundra 5.7L already has the same HP and torque of the Ford Super Duty 6.2L. - john_betExplorer IINow the price for it just went down. Cummins needed someone besides Nissan to sweeten the pot on production numbers. I have not been in Columbus enough to see any Toyota test mules rolling around.

I think you are wrong, but I hope you are right. I read the article mentioned above and it was interesting. This diesel will be a "light weight" diesel... but it is still going to be substantially heavier than the current gas engines in the Toyota and Nissan. I'm not sure on the numbers... but even a couple hundred pounds is HUGE if they don't increase their payload numbers.
My next truck is going to need at least 2000 lbs of realistic payload on a truck with some options. With a growing family and eventually a bigger and heavier trailer the current 1600 lbs payload of my 2010 Tundra won't cut it in another 5 years or so.
