2017 SD trailer tow rating

I'd buy a 350. I got a 250 w/ the 10k GVW option and I'm limited to around 2100 of cargo weight. Now that we want a 5th wheel toy hauler, I'm going to be slightly over the "legal" weight. I know the truck will tow a 12k/2300 pin weight toy hauler easily, but I'll be overweight. I have airbags on the truck already to level out the load with my current trailer. The 250 rear end does squat quite a bit, so you may look at adding them. The downside of a 350 SRW is finding one. I have 3 large dealers around me and there are only around 8-10 combined at all of them. The '17 aren't discounted nearly as much as my '15 was. I'm still torn to shell out $64k for a new 350 or not.

Watch the ACTUAL payload. I saw a 2017 SD CC 4x4 6.7 with a payload of around 1,8xx pounds.

Pretty sure you are looking at the difference between either the shortbed at 15k and the long bed at 17k for the F250 4x4 configuration.

In any case, the diesel engine won't care if its 15k or 17k back there.

The truck won't care if it's carrying 2100 or 2400 lbs. The lawyers probably might, if you get into an accident.

If you care about lawyer numbers, get the F350 for an extra $1000 bucks to cover that.

Payload ratings on tires are more important than some covering posterior end lawyer payload numbers. Tires are made of rubber, which can heat up and pop.

I believe from my research on here- Don't exceed your tire, axle, & GCVWR and you should be solid.

And it won't flinch at either load, so sort of a moot point. 3klbs start them sagging and still not over any other rating other than the class 2 gvw of 10klbs.

Why are you looking at an f250 rather than a f350 srw? They are almost identical in everyway including price....the difference is the f350 has overload springs and can carry twice the hitch weight of an f250.

Not sure what you mean by those. The F250 has 210 pound MORE payload than the F350 SRW for any given configuration at both the 9900 and 10000 weight ratings (the 350 is a heavier truck). Even at the F350s highest SRW rating of 11500 the payload only tops the F250 by 480 pounds, which is not much given what insurance rates do above 10000 (at least in my state)

The receiver on my F250 is rated at 21000 trailer weight, 2100 tongue weight (both carrying and distributed, which fly's in the face of everything I have seen before in hitches), same as any F350 SRW configuration.

Given that the OP clearly stated he's looking at diesels, with due respect yours is an irrelevant post lacking accuracy. An identically equipped F350 SRW 6.7 does not have only "480 pounds" of capacity than an F250 6.7 it has more than 1,000 pounds. Go check the website. Hopefully you're not one of those 3/4 ton owners who think the door sticker doesn't matter.

My 2005 F250 with diesel weighed 7250 lbs and had a 9800 lb GVWR - I was usually closer 12,500 lbs GVW and 19,500 lbs GCW when packed up and ready to camp. It can be done, but I had to spend about $3000 in upgrades to do this safely in 2012. It would cost you over $4000 today and any remaining warranty is void that you have not already run out. This is something I would not hesitate to do again on a vehicle outside of warranty but would rather buy a stock vehicle that is capable given the choice.
