Use has to be considered, as well. If you plan to go to Alaska or cross-country, get a bigger truck. If you are just going to slip out of town for a few weekends in a Summer, trick out a new F150 that will handle the payload. I haven't priced new Fords, lately. You may find that a 1 ton is about the same price as an HD tricked out F150. Also, with the longevity of these newer trucks, buying a used truck may be a good alternative.
One caveat: Have the dipstick tube treated and repainted/coated so it doesn't rust out. I spent the better part of this afternoon trying to remove the stub of my dipstick tube. Tomorrow, I will be going in with a MacGyvered up extension so that I can either tap and pull the remaining tube out of the block or will hammer and push it into the pan. Either way, it will be tedious because of the location.
