The fine print on "tow ratings" is that they are based on a completely empty base model truck with one 150 lb driver. As you add weight to the vehicle, either through options, passengers, or cargo, you are reducing your tongue rating. Also a typical TT is 8' wide and 8' tall, so 64 sq ft of frontal area.
Also the 10-15% of trailer weight that's on the tongue becomes cargo for the truck, and 150/1500 trucks will exceed their GVWR based on the tongue weight before they max out the tow rating.
As was noted a 250/350 truck gets you not just payload, but heavier rear axle, brakes, suspension, tires, frame, etc etc etc. There's more to controlling a heavy towing load than just the power to drag it up a hill.
Given that you are planning to travel the US and not just be a weekend warrior, I would encourage you to take a pass on the 150 and shop for a 250/350.
Ralph's gonna need to make more popcorn if you ask whether you should get the diesel or gas motor in that 250.....
