We all know that many F-150 owners are happy towing 6,000 pound trailers. The OP asked about 9,000 pounds or the 12,000+ pounds that Ford advertises.
A 4,500 pound aluminum pickup towing a 9,000 pound trailer that is 9 feet tall, 30 feet long and 8 feet wide might get interesting in an emergency situation.
And Why would this be any different than a 7000 or 8000 lb 1 ton towing a 15,000 lb RV or even a 22,000 lb RV? See lots of that because that's what they are rated for. Weight difference is more then twice of what you are quoting.
Read my whole comment. That is why I included length width and height in the statement. Double the length of the trailer behind your one ton example and tell me how stable it would be in an emergency. It is the "total" package, not just the weight involved in towing a trailer. A compact twenty foot trailer hauling 6,000 pounds of iron castings about 36 inches tall is a lot different than a tall wide and long travel trailer.
