Rincon you have brought up a good point. Mainly folks did not pay much attention to ratings, you just got in and drove.
My late 1960's Plymouth wagon was a beast. Heavy as the dickens and more than 400 cu. in. engine displacement. I could brag whenever I got 14 mpg not towing but gas was 29 cents per gallon so it did not matter as much. Interstate highways were a rare treat.
You do have to keep in mind that a large TT at the time was 18 feet long. They heavy by today's standards but were single axle and ran on "P" tires.
There is much to-do these days about proper TT and TV matching and given the sized of our multi-slide TTs, weight can be an issue. Still, a less than optimum TV and TT combination does not mean it is unusable or unsafe.
