As for diesel/gas...I'm a big believer in flexibility. I like the idea of traveling to points south of the Texas border (and north of the Panama Canal). Will I do it? Maybe, I dunno. But I'd like the ability to if I want to. There is a ton of stuff to see/do here and in Canada. After learning about the whole 'ultra low sulfur diesel' thing, I have kinda cooled to the idea of having a diesel truck. I recognize a lot of the benefits of diesel, but at the same time, it COULD limit me.I'd suggest to check fuel availability and quality if going across the Mexican border and South. Gasoline from Pemex is of a slightly lower quality than pump gas N of the Rio Grande but passable. Diesel fuel is prevalent throughout South America, the third world, any all over everywhere else. The low maintenance schedule list of a diesel may also be a boon. If I was going to Panama, I'd have a couple of boxes of filters, grease, a small drum of oil, and an auxiliary fuel tank for my diesel.
Generally, today's 1/2 ton -> 1 ton pickup trucks are miles above what was common 30 years ago. The Ecoboost engine is a winner and the performance reports point out it's excellent towing characteristics. The platform is where it lacks if pulling over 8K lbs. The bigger trucks just do a better job and the driving experience is much better. Again, price and budget are always a consideration and I would be doing my research.
I think if I was going to Central America, I'd get a good truck camper or a utility van and build it out. If I towed anything, it would be an enclosed utility trailer. They are good for import/export and can also double as bunk space, if needed.
Good luck with the search!
