The j2807 standard only provides the testing means and it’s up to the manufacturers to set the TWR. Some manufactures push it further than others and some vehicles could actually say they exceed. For the sake of marketing and sales the 1/2 tons are pushed to the ragged edge for bragging rights. This is why it’s good to understand just what the standard is and how it’s executed. In many cases the TWR is just a calculated value since not all vehicle combinations are tested. Bottom line is it’s still very confusing for the consumer to sort out and Ford seems to purposely make it so at least on the f150. On the other hand Nissan is the only manufacturer that sets a TWR for every trim level based on actual curb weights and puts pin weight limits on paper in black and white. Like GM it won’t help them win the tow rating wars but the numbers are more realistic for consumers since the vehicles perform well as rated.
