It's not new technology, the knob has been around in the cars and SUV's for a while. Most transmissions are electric shift anyway they just put a shift column with a cable down to the switch. The cable and shifter is just more mechanical stuff to break IMO.
x2. "Real" trucks (large HD trucks) with automatics have had a touchpad instead of a shifter for 20 years or more. The Ram 1500 has used the rotary shifter for a while, and all pickups have buttons for manual shifting.
