- Grit_dogNavigator III agree there is the perfect rim width for every tire width, however millions (probably) of tires that are a little wide for the rims have been used successfully.
Proper inflation pressure to gain the right contact patch goes a long way with tire life as well. Becoming more difficult with the tire nannys now, TPMS.
If it was dangerous to mount a 12" wide tire on an 8" wide rim I'd be dead by now. My setup with the big ole AF camper drove all over Canada and AK with 295 tires on 17x8 rims. Maybe they were 17x9. - Me_AgainExplorer IIIBecause others place to wide of a tire on OEM rims is not a reason you you to do it. Here is a link that explains tire vs rim widths.

Chris - Grit_dogNavigator IIYou could go up to 285s without issue on the truck like rubbing in front but IMO 285s are a little wide for the PYO wheels or steelies on your truck.
265s are fine and will only set you up a half inch taller but they look a heck of a lot better. - BurbManExplorer III went to 265's on aftermarket 8" rims. You will gain about 1/2" of lift, ie the bed will be 1/2" taller. You will also reduce your rear axle ratio, ie my factory 4.10 is really a 3.94 with the taller tires.
- ksssExplorerMy MPG's suffered some with the 265's, but they look so much better it was worth it.
- Double_HaulExplorerI switched to 265's on the stock rims and now have about 45000 miles on the Bridgestone Duelers. They have worn fine. It may just be me but it seems my around town mileage dropped from 11 to 12 mpg to 10mpg when I put the tires on. Could be the tires themselves are not as efficient. The speedo and odometer runs around 4% off. They sure look better than the 245's but I think overall performance was better with the 245's. Looks like I will need to make the decision again soon myself.
- donn0128Explorer II265's also require a rim that is about a 1/2 inch wider than your 6 inch wide stock rims.

I am thinking of going from 245/75/16 tire to the 265's. Anyone do this and have issues, ie bed clearance on fiver is my main concern. thanks
265's should be mounted on wider rims than the ones that 245's come stock on! Mine are on 8.25" OEM I believe. Most 245's are on 6.5" rims. 265's need to wider rim for the tread to correct contact the ground.
Chris - kellertx5erExplorerThe 265s will be about 1.2" taller, which will affect odometer/speedo readings. RPM will be reduced somewhat at a given speed.
