3.0 VM EcoDiesel Oil Requirement has Changed

The dealer corrected themselves and said we can run either oil but it has to be 5W-40. They are putting in the Shell Rotella 5W-40

We recommend you use 5W-40 synthetic engine oil such
as MOPAR or Shell Rotella that meets FCA Material
Standard MS-10902 and the API CJ-4 or ACEA E9/E7 or
ACEA A3/B4 engine oil category is required.


Here are the specs for the Euro Pennzoil.

Yes but your cousin was using an oil that wasn't specified and some exotic 5W30 Euro oil is was ram specified until now.

Having said that running 15W40 probably isn't hurting a thing, but if it was me I would try a 5W40 just to see if it would improve the mpg.

With the new API CK oil coming out at the end of the year there will be lower viscosity oils coming to market just like the gas engines are now running lower viscosity oils.

I know that. I take it you are not a diesel owner?

Same for the 2014 ecodiesels. I had the 2nd revision and the web site has an 8th revision.

Difference between 5w40 and 15w40 is viscosity, either can be synthetic or synthetic blend.

Yep downloaded the 2015 diesel supplement from your link and it now reads (from page 104 now)

We recommend you use 5W-40 synthetic engine oil such as MOPAR or Shell Rotella that meets FCA Material Standard MS-10902 and the API CJ-4 or ACEA E9/E7 or ACEA A3/B4 engine oil category is required.

Not the CEAC3 SAE 5W-30 Synthetic Low Ash engine oil meeting FCA US Material Standard MS-11106 or Pennzoil Ultra Euro L full synthetic 5W-30 motor oil.
