3.0 VM EcoDiesel Oil Requirement has Changed

Looks like the engineers of the VM 3.0 EcoDiesel has changed the oil requirement to a API CJ4 5W40. You may want to consider this change on your next oil change.

Copy/Paste
Engine Oil We recommend you use 5W-40 synthetic engine oil such as MOPAR or Shell Rotella that meets FCA Material Standard MS-10902 and the API CJ-4 engine oil category is required.

  • Its in the on-line Ram trucks owners service manual... I selected 2015 and 2014 model and they both on page 103 have the oil specification. The recommendation is now 5W40 and no longer is a 5W30 is specified.

If this is indeed true, this is fantastic news for EcoDiesel owners. I know that the current standard is technically ACEA C3 5w-30 or something like that which is almost like finding unicorn tears in the US. All oils meeting this spec were at minimum $8.00 per quart, or worse. This would actually make things cheaper for Ecodiesel owners. Get 2 gallons and 2 quarts and now your oil costs only 50 bucks instead of 80 to 120 bucks for ACEA C3 meeting 5w-30.

    Source would be nice though.

NAPA and Auto Zone both have it around here, but at a price of 9.35 and 8.99. I can get the Penn for 6.85 at the dealer with my discount. Filters are the thing that is hard to find. There are NO oil filter that meet the factory specs as of three months ago. There are filters out there but both companies have yet provided an data the there filter has been tested and meets the factory spec.

  • Can't find anything about the new spec where did you hear this Troy? Is it for the 2016 engines or does it back date to all of them?

This is from page 103 of the "Diesel Engine" supplement.
    Engine Oil Viscosity (SAE Grade)
"Only use ACEAC3 SAE 5W-30 Synthetic Low Ash engine oil meeting FCA US Material Standard MS-11106 or Pennzoil Ultra Euro L full synthetic 5W-30 motor oil, which is recommended for all operating temperatures.
This engine oil improves low temperature starting and
    vehicle fuel economy.

My truck goes in Wednesday for an oil change.
  • Hmm, 5W40 is basically the synthetic version of 15W40. This will increase the maintenance cost. I wonder what prompted the change.
