I think the 3:73 would be the perfect one, right in the middle...gives you that "grunt" to get going and you get decent mpg.....If towing 24,000#, I'd opt for the 3:73, if towing in the mountains....but, that's just me.

I agree that a 3:42 would be more than enough for what the OP want's to tow....When I purchased my first Ram, a 2010, the only way I could get enough GCWR to tow my 5er without going over GCWR was with the 4:10, (yeah, I'm one of the fools that tries to stay "under" the GVWR and GCWR, right, wrong or indifferent, it's what I do)...Same when I purchased the 2012....the 4:10 offered where I needed GCWR...SO, when I ordered the 2013, I didn't do ALL my home work I guess and figured, I'd need to go with the 4:10...."IF" I had KNOWN at the time that I could have gotten a 3:73, I'd ordered a 3:73 ratio....but, being stupid on just about everything, I got the 4:10 because I do 95% of my towing on some fairly steep, curvy mountainous secondary roads, and a few places on the interstate at 7%...thus, the overkill...."IF I KNEW THEN, WHAT I KNOW NOW"...or 'SHOULDA, COULDA, WOULDA"....SO, I have the 4:10 and love it ANYWAY, mpg is better than the 10 and the 12 and HP and TQ is up, and GVWR and GCWR are WAYYYYYY UP:)...so, in the long run, no regrets and if I go heavier, I got the truck to do it with.

again, no more than the OP is going to tow...I'd go with the 3:42's also. The 68RFE transmission will handle that no issues...if you find one with the Aisin, then you got "banana pudding":B

It is debated ALOT on the Cummins forum :B Just me but I would never need the 4.1 cause I would never be towing that much weight. I would go with the 3.73's but most of the guys running 3.42 seem to be doing pretty well. Not to many RV's weighing in at 20k lbs :W

First thing to learn is that it's a "Cummins".
After that it's easy, just press the go pedal and don't worry about gearing or anything else.

I'd be all over it, especially with the double OD trans. I have single OD and I get 18+ mpg @ 75-80 mph. Craig

Axle 3:73 tows 23,630

Axle 4:10 tows 29,130"....

IMO, those are smoke and mirrors numbers....the only real way the different rear end ratios affect towing weights is the ability to start from a dead stop and put less stress on the drive train as you get a greater weight moving.

My 3:73 6 speed pulled 19K just fine, it just didn't stop worth a damn.
