3 regens in 300k

I own a 2017 f350 with 6.7. Love the beast.
Just noticed last weekend on a family trip that I drove about 300- 350 kilometers and had 3 regens. I know that shutting off or putting in park stops this cycle as I owned a 2012 for 5 years and intentionally tried to complete the regen.
Anyone encounter this? The first was at highway speeds and it completed for sure. A bit miffed?

Do you ever have issues with the DEF freezing? I'm a ways north of you, and I've had mine freeze before, and send up warning signals. I just had mine in the dealer last weekend, to thaw out the DEF and replace a pump. I'm under warranty as well, but a delete may be in my future, especially since the dealer does it.

DEF freezes but the system is designed with heated sumps and lines to thaw it out. Until a heater fails the system work fine in very cold climates. I had a heater go out on my 2011 Ford which triggered the check engine light at 140,000 km. I ran it that way for about a year before changing the heater.

My 2016 would regen every 400 miles. I'm guessing my 2017 is very similar. I know the regen can be interupted quite easily. Often it only cleans to 60%. I think driving extra miles or avoiding a slower traffic area to make sure a regen finishes is a waste of time and money. You can have the dealer add the % DPF filter screen to your dic on any of the Powerstroke trucks or add it yourself using the free software download called Forscan.

  • My F350 has just over 4,900 mile, all but 600 towing. Got an oil change needed warning and has used 2 full jugs of DEF.
  • Typically, (I can't speak to Fords system as I don't know it) regen is triggered by a pressure sensor on the DPF. Frequent regen can be a sign of a plugged DPF, or faulty sensor.

It may be worth taking your truck on a long hard drive with high (safe range of course) egt and rpm. Perhaps lockout overdrive or your top gear. Generate lots of heat and burn the dpf out.

I Know that the ecu on Ford agricultural equipment can be set to do parked regen, it makes the pipes glow... Might be an option for your truck as well.

Or, maybe it's time to delete. (delete and other tampering with pollution control may be illegal, this advice is at your own risk.)

The trip was through mountains 130 k one way so it was getting out on the highway and stretching her legs. That first regen completed . But to have another one the next day with a short drive and another the following day is unusual. My 2012 had the prompt screen indicating drive to clean filter. I typically know when it starts and ends due to the fuel decline and smell.
This one is a bit strange.
No deletes as all under warranty.
    Thanks for responses,
    Merry Christmas all!!
  • regen smeegen, why the concern. You are being green while my truck spews soot. Glad you are, makes up for my pre tier 4 diesels. I have more than one. All my farm tractors are pre tier 4 as well and the all smoke. No smoke, no fire, no power.
  • just drive it, who cares how many regens it does. keep track of your fuel usage if it's not adversely impacted what's the problem?

  • Before that trip how many miles (km) did you drive short trips?
