I like the idea of aluminum but consider this. I had an aluminum luggage rack on top of a 89 Chevy van, the classic U shape with the front open encircling the rear so you could place your luggage inside the railing. The fasteners were screwed to the roof of course and the railing was free to move through the fasteners which were shaped like a hoop. The ends of the railing at the front were pinned solid in the fastener/hoop.
The expansion of this railing was enough because the ends were pinned and not able to float to put a very noticeable fist sized dent in the top of the Chevy van on both sides where the railing terminated. And this was not light duty metal back then.
So aluminum is cool, but allowances should be made when spanning or tying something down.
