Monday we are going to try out a 3/4 ton gas Silverado 3/4 ton, 4.1 axle ratio, 4WD. Going from a Tundra because we've run out of GVWR on the truck (because we take too much stuff). We get 8-9 MP...

9 towing an 8000 lb trailer is a little optimistic. I'd expect 7-8. Not towing will depend on your driving. Maybe 16 if you do a lot of highway, 12 if more around town. Check out Fuelly.
Watch out for the outlier reports. People tend to take their best tank under ideal circumstances and declare that as their average MPG.
