Yep, totally different times for sure... When I was all of those ages (yes, back in late 60's- 70's) we just pitched a couple of tents! :)
But yes, I know that's not how it's done now.. :)
I do see large families still going out and camping in tents with young kids... I think that's really the only way to figure out if you are able to do this "camping" thing...
But, of course you can jump right into the whole RV thing and that's fine too.
Good that you are asking questions up front and I'm sure you will get a lot better advice than what I just typed out...
