I've towed with v8 gassers, v8 diesels and now a v6 gasser. They all did the job based on the power and torque they had and the trailer they were towing. 4X2 or 4X4 makes little difference if you tow on roads in good weather. If you plan on spending a lot of time in the back country you might want a 4X4 but that's where I camp most of the time and have never needed a 4 wheel drive. You may have a different experience but so far, traveling through 49 states and much of Canada, that's what has always worked for me.
