No doubt the dakota will tow better than the nissan but I would look around for a 1/2ton. You can probably get one for the same price and if both have a V8, the MPG will likely be pretty close to the same. But it will likely have stronger suspension to handle the load (check the actual specs as they can vary a lot).
Get a 4x4 if you go off roading. It won't help you accelerate up hills any faster. The only nice thing is low range can be handy if you camp in rough terrain as it will allow you to push or pull the trailer up a steep hill without having to give it much gas. Otherwise, it is of no use while towing.
