I would stick with the 4X4 to make it to work in the winter.
Consider a 5.4L V8 F-150 to tow the trailer, and ask your insurance agent if you can 'stop' the liability insurance on the truck in the fall, when you will not be towing. Then look for a very used F-150, perhaps 150,000 miles on it, and use that as the 'junker' truck. Just give it minimal insurance in the spring- fall, and don't drive it in the winter. You should be able to find a 96-2000 truck for a very good price.
