The main reason we got it is that it opens a huge amount of otherwise inaccessible areas out west. Like this:

You would be unwise to visit those areas without 4WD tho we only used it occasionally on the dirt roads in.
But on the downside you have more gear to maintain on the truck and it adds weight which subtracts from payload. I've never needed it in the snow myself.
