As you have seen, there are plenty of opinions. I'll add mine for the $0.02 ($0.005 after taxes) that it's worth.
The truck in my signature is a 4WD, Crew Cab, Long Bed, DRW.
I drive it daily to and from work, as well as using it to tow the 43' toy hauler we live in. 4WD is VERY well worth it to me. In the snow I have NO problems (including one road I'm required to take that usually has anywhere from five to twenty 2WD vehicles stuck off to the right when there is a good storm), and on muddy roads it also makes a real difference. One in particular comes to mind where we would have been really stuck with only 4x2. 4x4 allowed us to get ourselves out.
It does cut into your weight a little. We lost 1000 lbs of towing capacity (29,000 instead of 30,000). That trade-off was well worth it, and we still have far more than enough capacity to tow our trailer and stay within all limits.
As a firearms instructor, I tell my students to give themselves EVERY advantage. In trucks, I look at 4WD as an advantage.
