I've owned a number of 2WD drive trucks. There have been a number of times when I had to drive through very bad weather unexpectedly. On those occasions 4WD would have definitely reduced my stress level. It's not comforting knowing most of the weight on a 2WD truck is wasted on the front axle where there's zero power delivery to the ground.
For our last new truck purchase, we decided to spend the extra ~$3k for 4WD. 4WD is not like ~$3k in misc. power gadgets. 4WD adds distinct, universal value to a truck. Typically you'll get most, if not all, of that initial ~$3k back vs. the same truck in 2WD.
I've concluded that 4WD, all said and done, is very similar to a very little, to no-cost, insurance policy with one huge caveat---you can use it as much (or as little) as you want---without getting penalized. Almost a win-win in my book.
