4WD vs. 2WD is very situation dependent. Drove in Alaska for 30+ years with primarily 2WD. Got a 4x4 when I purchased my 1st new vehicle. Never looked back. Can one drive in almost all road conditions with 2WD? Yes. Is 4x4 a much greater convenience? Yes.
While not a necessity, IMNSHO, 4x4 + real studded tires is almost the only ticket for polished ice at paved intersections. Goes double if towing.
While not a necessity, IMNSHO, 4x4 + chains all around would take me on any road in AK at any time except when Thompson pass is closed due to snow. Then my 4x4 + chains will guarantee that I get back to Glennallen.
For the nominal difference in $$ compared to the very increased convenience, 4WD is a sound decision in my view.
